Powel House

WMG restored the openings on the South and West façade of the Powel House.

Powel House

Built in 1765, the three-bay, red brick Powel House is considered one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the United States. It was home to Samuel Powel and his wife Elizabeth Willing Powel. The Powels were seminal figures in the country’s founding and entertained the political elite during the drafting of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. George Washington counted Elizabeth Powel as one of his closest confidants and the house holds the distinction of being “the house where George Washington danced.”
